So another action packed weekend has drawn to a close. Lots of fun was had but today I'm shattered, absolutely pooped. However I am looking forward to the week ahead, not that I have much on.
Saturday the girls and myself packed up a yummy picnic and headed into Henley to soak up a bit of regatta atmosphere. We stay right out the way of the main event because it just gets too busy and it's darn expensive too.
It's a great place to people watch. Of course you get your Hooray henrys and your Ra Ra Rachels but the best ones are the common folks who dress up in their best Primani and actually look the part until they open their mouths.
We sat by a boat which had some girls quaffing champers on the bow and their lads at the stern drinking cans of lager. The girls we're laughing with extra energy and the guys we're probably just talking about bricklaying or football.
At one point the girls all stood up to sing Happy Birthday to one of the guys and it was at that point you realised that it probably wasn't their boat! This rendition had no "H" in happy and birthday was spelt with an "F"..............
"Appy burfday to you, appy burfday day to you, appy burfday dear Daaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrreeeeenn, appy burfday to yooooooooouuuu"
Another lady (I'm being polite) disembarked from the boat with the jazz band, immediately lit a cigarette then proceeded to stand with loads young kids at a kiosk and then ordered a hot dog, still puffing away. Really classy.
Still we had a good time and Emily got to work on her cricket bowling which I have to say is coming on well, she's getting her arm straight and showing signs of good accuracy....which is quite amazing seeing as it's me giving the tuition.
Saturday afternoon and evening was a musical affair. Firstly a quick warm up and a few beers at my buddies house followed by DJ'ing at Bar Mango in Reading. It was great fun being out in the garden with like minded people. I think we all did well musically and created a really nice party atmosphere which was almost like it used to be.
I'm not sure how or when I got home, I think it was about 6am via a little after party at a friends house (sorry neighbours). Getting in at that time isn't unusual for me but then playing cricket for the whole day after doing so is normally not my idea of fun.
For some reason I thought the game was starting at around 2pm but I upon arrival at 12:30pm I soon realised that I was wrong....by 2 hours. Worse still was that I was informed that my chat to the journalist during the week had made it to the paper and lets just say the teachers at the club gave me some stick for it.
I stand by the comments I made although I'm pretty sure they changed a few words and I'm definitely not 36 years old. I won't go into to much detail on the article but it was concerning the teachers strike and as someone who pays quite a lot of tax I think I'm entitled to an opinion on how the public sector workers behave.
My friend wrote an excellent blog on the situation here and it echoes my thoughts exactly. I'd much rather people read this than what was in the paper as I do feel a little empathy (but not a great deal) for some of the strikers which doesn't really come across in the newspaper article.
Anyway they'll get over it :-) I do enjoy the banter though.
Once cricket was finished I went straight home to the sofa and some good old fashioned sleepy TV. First off it was the Goodwood festival of speed coverage on Sky which gave me a few nod off moments then Top Gear which is just so boring and predictable one can't help but feel sleepy. Coast followed that and I absolutely love that program but it always sends me to sleep, I find myself having to catch up on all the bits I've missed on the iPlayer.
I didn't actually get off the sofa until 1am. I blame Robson Green and his extreme fishing for that one.
I had a craving for a hot and spicy lamb curry yesterday but my laziness mean't I had to settle for cold pizza. It even had Pineapple on it !!! Pineapple on pizzas is just so wrong, I feel dirty for eating it! Best satisfy the curry craving tonight although I'm going make it myself rather that get one from uncle Raj.

What to do.....
Well I always thought it might happen soon and even though I do have one small task to do today after work I actually have a free evening to spend at home.
Yesterday saw the last semi final of Reading, steady, cook and the next action on that front is during the Eat Reading Live food festival on the 4th & 5th June. I'll be doing little bits and bobs throughout the whole weekend with some comparing and also a demo on stage on the Sunday between 13:30 & 14:00.
Eat Reading have secured Gennaro Contaldo to come along and open the festival. He of course has links to Reading through Jamie's Italian where he is a partner with Mr Oliver.
I really like that Eat Reading have decided to avoid going down the whole TV celeb route because then it becomes more about them than about all the great talent and produce our wonderful town has at it's disposal. Henley food festival took the TV celeb route and unfortunately that seems to be struggling to get off the ground due lack of funding. It would be such a shame to lose an event like this which means so much to all the local farmers and restaurants that put in all the hard work.
The next thing in the diary for me is a DJ set for Hat Club at Bar Mango, Reading this coming Saturday. I've got the 11:30pm - 1am slot which is probably my favourite so I'm dead chuffed about that. Hat Club is just one of the clubbing brands that I really like because they are all about having fun and not too pretentious about the whole clubbing experience.
Following that however I will be doing something with Bora Bora which if you didn't already know is one of my favourite places in the world.......not the paradise islands of French Polynesia but the beach bar in Playa Den Bossa, Ibiza. I'm not sure who they are having as the main guest but I really hope it's Alex Miles as he's my favourite resident there so hopefully he'll come and make and appearance in our not so sunnier climes.
Not quite sure of just how much fun Bora Bora is.........
And nobody has more fun than this man.......LEGEND is not the world..

Back home.......
The news of my impending fatherhood has sunk in now and it's been great receiving all the well wishes from our good buddies.
A few celebratory drinks were had on Saturday at Bar Mango in Reading. As I was DJ'ing fairly early there wasn't a great deal of people there so it gave me the opportunity to drop in a remix of Wahoo's Make Em Shake It (Original available on Defected records) that I'd done that morning.....

.....needs some tweaking but I think it's quite jolly, uplifting and really quite good even if I say so myself!!!
My set went well, was pretty happy with my tune selection mixing up some new tracks with some revamped old classic house tunes. I didn't stay there too late as I had cricket club things to do the next day however I ended up back at my buddies house spinning more tunes and drinking more eventually falling asleep on his sofa and waking up much later than I wanted too.....Sunday was very hard work !!!
Sort of back to normality now. Busy at work due to a colleague taking some well deserved holiday so the day is flying along leaving me barely enough time to think about important things such as what sauce to have with the home made Prawn and Chilli Ravioli that I'm going to make for tea later.....I'm thinking I might do a simple Cherry Tomato sauce. I was going to do a light Dolcelatte one but of course that's a soft cheese and not suitable for an expectant mother.
I'm also making starts into the 80/20 process and outsourcing my life....(Read The 4 hour week by Timothy Ferriss) I've already decided that learning about setting up websites and making use of Affiliate Marketing is the way forward. It'll take some time to get going of course but if there is one thing I have on my hands is time....my ears are my tools at work....my hands are free to do as they please :-) The next thing will be finding a virtual PA to handle everything else.
So must dash, need to get some lunch.

Normality resumes....
3 weeks away and back to work this morning. I have quite a bit of jetlag but the work diary is pretty full so I should be nicely busy today which will keep me alert and awake.
After getting home from Heathrow on Saturday morning I spent the day snuggled up on the sofa with my wonderful lady watching a fantastic game of cricket, well I watched some of it in between dozing off.
During this I took a DJ booking for that evening at Sakura in Reading. Pretty quiet in there it was too. Also I was asked to play more charty music which firstly I don't have and secondly I will never have because to me if a song gets into the charts these days it's because, it's anti-music, it's rubbish, it's dross, it's boring, it's predictable......it's just shit. I'm not selling out even more than I have already regardless of the payment.
I mean it's not as if I was playing anything other than what you'd find on the average (or distinctly lower than average) Hed Kandi compilation and even when I stopped playing the good quality house music that had foots tapping and people clapping the atmosphere in the room vanished. So my advice to them would be to just save money and don't book a DJ at all. Just have a compilation CD playing in the background or rig up some kind of automated DJ program. Trying to fix things that are not broken has never been a good thing to do in my opinion.
I understand what they want to do and I'm not upset by it at all and I really mean mean that but with all the sincerity in the world I'm just not the man to do it. Good luck to them :-)
Apart from that I do have some good gigs coming up where I have free reign to get the crowd motivated and of course I'm really looking forward too. This Saturday I once again have the pleasure of sharing the DJ booth at the club I call home with one of my dance music heros Brandon Block over at Bar Mango in Reading. It's always nice to see your name on a flyer under someone like Blocko. Hopefully he'll pull in a crowd and we can all have a wonderfully fun night.
Set times for this are not yet announced but when they are I'm sure they will be posted on the Facebook event page here. I'm thinking a classic house set is really the only way to go here and I'm already getting a nice selection of tunes prepared. If you liked my Remix/Remode mix CD then this will be the kind of night you'll be loving.
After that I have another booking at the same venue for Voodoo's 5th birthday. This event is a very special one because it is also a fundraiser for the promotor's (and good friends) campaign to raise funds for his partners treatment as she is a sufferer of multiple sclerosis. Again you can check the Facebook event page here and if your around please do come down and support this tremendously worthy cause.
For this event I'll be showing my tech house/techno side out in the garden so expect some heavy Sven Vath/Cocoon influence going on. I simply cannot think of any place in the area that even gets close to the Bar Mango terrace. It's always been a very special place for me and I'm just itching to get out there again.
After a couple of years finding it's way it seems Bar Mango has got it's legs back which is good for everybody in my opinion. For me it's still the only venue in the town dedicated to clubbers rather than drinkers out on a jolly. It's a place to go to hear what'll be listed on compilations and blasting out of other bars in a 6 months to a years time once David Guetta has bunged some cheesey vocals over it :-)

This Wednesday coming I shall be judge and compare for heat 3 of round 1 of the 2011 Reading, Steady, Cook competition. The heat is being held at the marvellous "Tutu's Ethiopian Table". Having taken part in this myself last year I know how nervous the contestants will be so if you have time please do come down and give them a bit of support. It's a great little competition and being part of it again this year is just a fantastic honour.

Blog off.........
So it's been a while and I've suffered from another attack of lazyblogitis. I've been a bit busier at work in the last few weeks which is fantastic but it's left little time to think of bloggy stuff.
I was asked about my lack of blogging activity last Wednesday by a buddy and only yesterday by central Twyford's most wonderous, charming and welcoming pub landlady (Is that enough sucking up Karen?)
Good food, fine Ales and a warm welcome to all right here at the Duke of Wellington.
So a quick update about what's coming up in my world......
Musicwise I've been a little quiet on the DJ'ing front which has actually been quite welcome. I'm getting far too old to be doing it regularly as even though I love it there are other things in my life that require awareness on weekend mornings and the two never really have gone together all that well.
Saturday just gone I was spinning some tunes..........not playing..........don't you just hate it when DJ's say they are "playing" some tunes? I hardly think sticking on other peoples records and getting paid for it is "playing". Strumming a guitar, tinkling the ivories or bashing some drums is "playing".......sorry off on a tangent there !!! Where was I?........Oh I was spinning some tunes for the folks at my more regular haunt downstairs at Sakura. Was a very good night actually thanks to some rather nice tunes that'll shortly be busted out on the beaches at the Miami winter music conference.
The only other booking I have at the moment is at Bar Mango (the place I call home) in April (or is it May) alongside my DJ hero Brandon Block.....more info to follow on that....
Foodiewise I'm excited and honoured to have been asked to be a judge in this years Reading, Steady, Cook! competition. There are several heats leading up to the semi-finals and final which will be held in Reading town centre on the 4th and 5th of June 2011 as part of the Eat Reading Live programme. I had such fun being a contestant last year and it's just so nice to be part of it again this year and I'll also be doing a demo all of my own on one of the kitchen stages on the finals weekend.
Sportwise the cricket season is gearing up to kick off and net sessions down at my club (Sonning CC) have started. I have a small sub committee role at the club looking after all things related to the pavilion so I still have plenty of projects to get under way there before the season starts and in particular for our confirmed match against the MCC. Once the season gets going why not come along and spend a lazy day watching a match, we have plenty for the kids to do, a stocked bar and every now and then the BBQ gets a blasting.
In the professional game I think that the ICC world cup so far has been tremendous, perhaps a little drawn out with all the associate nations involved but I think it's right that they are there and as Ireland showed against England they can compete with the best now and again and they should be given that chance on the world stage, perhaps that result will encourage cricket Ireland to spend more money developing a team that can soon catch up with the test playing nations, they certainly have the talent there.
Travelwise...............not much going on.........
Oh except for that small 3 week trip to Melbourne I'll be taking in a few days time :-)
I'll be keeping you all up to date on that so don't you worry.

A good weekend and a Restaurant review
Very enjoyable weekend all told. Most of Sunday was spent nursing a headache from a rather fun Saturday.
Was going to head off to Cardiff on Saturday for an evening as my Cricket club were on their annual tour but after finding out that people were heading home and the tour party was thinning out I decided to instead give myself a little pamper in the form of a nice big lunch at Jamie Oliver's Italian restaurant in Reading.

Following that I headed over to The Ivory Lounge to meet up with a friend and share a couple of beers in what was a simply glorious day in Reading.
My buddy shifted off to get changed ready for his evenings DJ work at The Walkabout so I headed over to Jongluers comedy club where another friend is the sound & lighting tech for the comedy shows and the DJ for downstairs afterwards and that was a scream.
Can remember the last time I saw real comedy being performed. The compere John Mann was very good and a really nice fella to boot. Didn't believe him when he said he had a pet Lion until he showed me the photos. I mean how can you take it seruously when a comedian tells you he's got a pet Lion ?!?! There has to be a punchline somewhere but not in this case he really does.
Quite a few Stag and Hen parties in there which can of course be fun but it does mean that you get loads of really bad, uninteligent heckling. One group were particulaly bad but they were soon silenced by the headline act Steve Williams very good he was. That link isn't for his official site because to be honest it's rubbish.
Once he'd finished we headed over to The Walkabout where after waiting about 15 minutes to get a drink at the bar it was promptly knocked out of my hand so not really wanting to wait another 15 minutes for a new libation we headed over to Sakura
Usual fare here with some commercial but credible house music being played to the young and the beautiful. Spent the majority of the time here chatting with the new general manager and another DJ friend of mine who was on VIP room duty just as I will be this Friday coming.
Next stop Bar Mango. Was pretty busy, some alternative 70's music outside, mixture of soul classics and a bit of disco and inside I have to say not really all that inspiring but we stayed for quite a while chatting with people we know including the owner who really is a nice guy once you get to know him and the uber gay barman who had a night off and had got himself all dresses up for a night on the tiles....bless. He was worried about his mascara running!
OK plans for next week mainly revolve around a recipe I have been given for Cassoulet to test out for the Facebook page and also we have some friends coming over for dinner on Saturday and although I'm pretty settled on the menu it could change and most probably will.

Didn't believe him when he said he had a pet Lion until he showed me the photos. I mean how can you take it seruously when a comedian tells you he's got a pet Lion ?!?! There has to be a punchline somewhere but not in this case he really does.
Quite a few Stag and Hen parties in there which can of course be fun but it does mean that you get loads of really bad, uninteligent heckling. One group were particulaly bad but they were soon silenced by the headline act Steve Williams very good he was. That link isn't for his official site because to be honest it's rubbish.
Once he'd finished we headed over to The Walkabout where after waiting about 15 minutes to get a drink at the bar it was promptly knocked out of my hand so not really wanting to wait another 15 minutes for a new libation we headed over to Sakura
Usual fare here with some commercial but credible house music being played to the young and the beautiful. Spent the majority of the time here chatting with the new general manager and another DJ friend of mine who was on VIP room duty just as I will be this Friday coming.
Next stop Bar Mango. Was pretty busy, some alternative 70's music outside, mixture of soul classics and a bit of disco and inside I have to say not really all that inspiring but we stayed for quite a while chatting with people we know including the owner who really is a nice guy once you get to know him and the uber gay barman who had a night off and had got himself all dresses up for a night on the tiles....bless. He was worried about his mascara running!
OK plans for next week mainly revolve around a recipe I have been given for Cassoulet to test out for the Facebook page and also we have some friends coming over for dinner on Saturday and although I'm pretty settled on the menu it could change and most probably will.
